Low 50's last night... Therefore... A basil and tomato harvest was in order...

Regular green pesto, albeit with toasted, skinned hazelnuts replacing the pine nuts...
And ugly, delicious purple pesto with double the amount of hazelnuts...
Sometimes an experiment is a wonderful revelation. Sometimes it's a disaster. Sometimes you accept the good parts and ignore or excuse the not-so-good parts.
With two gorgeous purple basil plants in the yard, it occurred to me that pesto needn't be green... and that purple basil has a wonderful, full, deep flavor.

Ergo: purple pesto.
Here's the thing... It's really, really tasty. And it's really, really ugly.

So if you can get past the color, the taste is like regular pesto with a haunting depth.

But boy is it ugly. Even with flowers.
